Irregular Periods
Will I EVER be able to wear White Pants again?
Dealing with periods during menopause can be a real challenge. For some women it’s feast or famine. Some months there may be a literal flood, other months there may be little or no flow at all.
It is good to know that most abnormal bleeding during perimenopause is not unusual or harmful.
It is a very good idea to have your physician check you over for things like polyps or fibroids that may be causing your symptoms.
Remember that while the changes taking place are normal during perimenopause, the more difficult symptoms stem from hormonal imbalances.
Where, Oh Where Has My Period Gone?
-
Some women have very light or spotting during perimenopause. They may also have a period that lasts only a few days.
-
Frequently there are missed or skipped periods. These can sometimes be followed by a heavy period which lasts longer that expected.
-
Occasionally there may be more than one period in a month. That’s always fun.
-
Women may have flooding or a very heavy flow, which can sometimes be scary. It’s normal, but scary. Besides the obvious inconvenience of having excessively heavy periods, with heavy bleeding you may become anemic. If you are flooding during your periods and it concerns you, please see your doctor.
If you are having troubles with heavy periods you may be suffering from a lack of progesterone. Progesterone is one of the hormones responsible for keeping your uterine lining (the endometrium) nice and thick in case an egg is fertilized. When we don’t ovulate regularly, or at all, the uterine lining builds up and becomes overly thick. When too much lining builds up you have a heavy flow which may be accompanied by flooding, clotting, and a period that lasts longer than normal.
It also wipes out your plans to wear those cute new white slacks.
Now what?
Well, for starters we need to get the hormones under control, our adrenals balanced, take our diet in hand, and begin taking some good vitamins and essential fatty acids(EFA’s)
We could also take a look at bioidentical progesterone and see what that’s all about.
